It was a little over 28 years ago when Neal Caldwell, a mechanical engineer by education and profession, decided to combine his intense interest in gardening and inventing to develop innovative gardening products for others to enjoy. Needing an outlet for his ideas, he established Dalen Products, Inc. in 1975 to manufacture and market his product designs. |

During the first several years of business Dalen sold its products exclusively through lawn and garden and seed direct mail catalogs. Realizing that the size of the catalog market was very limited, the company began selling its products through garden centers to make its products available to more people. |

 Today, the Knoxville, TN-based company is well known throughout the gardening industry for continually bringing new products and concepts to the marketplace. In 1997, Dalen combined all of its product lines under one brand name: Gardeneer®. This was the first comprehensive branding approach designed to quickly and clearly help homeowners and landscapers understand the features, benefits and applications of landscape fabrics and other protective lawn and garden products.

One of the strong suits of Gardeneer is its comprehensive line of scarecrow devices designed to protect lawns and gardens from thieving pests and birds. These devices, ranging from holographic tape and inflatable snakes to life-size, rotating-head owls, have been tested and proven to be extremely effective when used following the manufacturer's recommendations. |

Dalen is best known for its innovative and high-performance landscape fabrics. In the 1980s, Dalen recognized the need for an alternative to the black plastic landscapers and homeowners commonly used as a subsurface in landscaping and gardening areas. The result was the invention of a perforated plastic "fabric" that combined the best properties of plastic with some ability to "breathe" and allow water to pass through to the ground below without compromising the ability of the fabric to prevent weed root penetration.
In 1989, following an exhaustive research of various landscape fabrics on the market, Dalen introduced Weed-X®, a premium fabric that was far superior to what was previously available. With the success of Weed-X, the company's line of landscape fabrics has grown over the past 18 years to include 5-Year, 10-Year and 20-Year Weed-Shield® fabrics, reflecting the different applications and length of money-back guarantees, and a full line of commercial fabrics. Dalen now offers the most comprehensive line of landscape fabrics in the industry.
